R.I.P Taylor Swift
The video begins with Taylor rising from the dead as she wants to kill her public image.
But if you look closely, as the zombie version of the pop star crawls from the grave, the tombstone next to hers is for Nils Sjöberg – the pseudonym she used for a song she wrote for ex Calvin Harris.
Queen of snakes
Taylor’s carefully painted image as a squeaky-clean pop star was destroyed last year when Kim Kardashian released a certain home video on Snapchat – and the snake emoji became code for Taylor online.
But in the new video, Taylor has taken ownership of her reputation as a snake and is seen sitting on a golden throne with snakes slithering around it.
Another message hidden in her throne is a quote from Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar.
Et Tu Brute meaning ‘You too, Brutus?’ is enscribed on the arm of the chair and means shock after being backstabbed by a friend or someone unexpected.
She’s also seen drinking tea – meaning gossip.
It could be a reference to Kanye West and Kim Kardashian betraying her by leaking their taped conversations after a dispute over his song Famous.
I heart T.S.
In one of the more overt scenes, Taylor clearly references her relationship with British actor Tom Hiddleston in the video.
She dances with a group of backing dancers all wearing a black version of the ‘I heart T.S.’ shirt that Tom was mercilessly ribbed in the press about.
He was seen making the embarrassingly public declaration of love at her fourth of July party last year.
Bathtub of diamonds
Taylor is seen reclining in a bathtub full of diamonds during one scene – which may be a reference to Kim Kardashian’s jewelry heist.
Her arch-nemesis was reportedly in the bathtub when her diamonds were robbed at gunpoint in Paris last year.
Also visible in the tub is a single dollar bill which could symbolize her recent court victory in a sexual assault case against a DJ – where she won $1 in damages.
Katy Perry lookalike
Her dig at Katy Perry is less subtle as she dons a platinum wig and looks remarkable similar to her pop rival.
She crashes a car while the paparazzi swarm around her in the dramatic scene.
Back in 2014, Taylor took aim at an unnamed pop rival who she blamed for sabotaging her stage performances by poaching backing dancers in a Rolling Stone interview.
The target of the juvenile complaint was quickly surmised to by Katy – with Taylor’s pop tune Bad Blood encapsulating her anger about the situation.
Swish Swish was believed to be Katy’s response to the feud, however the singer also expressed the hope of burying the hatchet with Taylor earlier this year.
Taylor ended the video with a bit that included every iteration of herself – from her innocent first album to her infamous 2009 VMAs appearance – where Kanye West interrupted her win to talk up Beyonce – to her new, edgy self.
